Den Gamle By: A “me-time” journey through an enchanting time capsule

by Judy Wanjiku Jørgensen

Den Gamle By (The Old Town) came to my mind the other day after my friend Lia (the genius behind Toto wraps) got into a chat over about the need for a mother to crave her own alone time, a moment of guiltfree pleasure.

We both, without any hesitation, agreed that having solitude and time for yourself can help one recharge, meditate and reduce stress.

Lately, I have been caught up in a rat race of school, family, my part-time hustle and the never-ending job applications.

My husband recently remarked that I was running on overdrive and that I should be careful not to have a burnout, as it has happened before.

But how can I pause right now, when I have a major exam coming up next month and lots of Danish to learn and practice before then.

His point was that all those factors notwithstanding, I need to take care of myself, put myself first and something only for me.

I reluctantly agree as I reckoned that I could use this autumn break week to have some alone time so that I could catch up on things that I love, such as thrift shopping, walking, reading, writing, and of course photography.

Den Gamle By

The highlight of my alone time has been a trip to Den Gamle By (The old town in Aarhus), a place that I have wanted to visit since I first came to Denmark.

The best part of this open museum has to be the people working there, who dress, work and behave in the manner of different eras spanning over 1200 years.

It was a surreal experience that felt like I was walking through a frozen time warp, brought to life by magic.

I spent 4 hours walking in awe through history, clicking my camera as I froze this moment in time for my own posterity.

The museum hosts an era dating back from the 1500s to the 1970s. Walking through every building and piece of history felt like I was walking through a frozen time warp, brought to life by magic. Den Gamle By is an absolute see if you are interested in culture and history.
